Seduce, conquer, succeed, dominate… win, win, win! Popular culture is full of larger-than-life characters held up as models of self-improvement and relentless success. In this trilogy of three standalone performances, which can also be experienced back-to-back, Juliette Navis turns her attention to three such figures as they grapple with existential crisis. Through them, she explores three enduring taboos: money, death and sex.
Pedro. The final chapter of the trilogy brings a duo to the stage. Beatriz and José Manuel, two performers who seem to have stepped straight out of a Pedro Almodóvar film, cross paths with Juan and Pepa aboard a spaceship. Together, they explore desire, sexuality and hypersexualisation. Drawing as much from the flamboyant imagination of the Spanish filmmaker as from the science fiction of Ursula K. Le Guin, Juliette Navis notably invokes The Left Hand of Darkness, where sex and reproduction are governed by Kemmer — a period during which all taboos are suspended. The result is a reflection that is as joyfully unhinged as it is stimulating.
